Historic win sparks massive Yaoundé celebration for Cameroon’s Lionesses

For the first time in history, the Camerounaises lifted the CAN trophy after a 3‑0 win over Malawi, while back home in Yaoundé thousands of Camerounais flooded the streets and airport to greet the triumphant Lionnes Indomptables, turning a sporting triumph into a national carnival.

A historic first for the Lionesses

The Camerounaises secured their first ever CAN title on Sunday, defeating Malawi 3‑0. It marked the inaugural triumph in the history of the Cameroon women’s national team. The side entered the tournament only after a November draw that followed the expansion of the competition from 12 to 16 teams.

A city erupts in celebration

On Monday the squad returned from Maroc and was welcomed with great pomp in Yaoundé. In Cameroun, thousands of Camerounais gathered at the airport, waving flags, jerseys and filming the arrival, creating an electrified atmosphere.

Hundreds of supporters lined the tarmac as the players stepped off the plane. In the streets, thousands of people on the sidewalks cheered the Lionnes Indomptables as they passed, proudly displaying the new cup.

The celebrations spilled into the night, with fans staying out late in several districts of Yaoundé on Sunday. The city’s streets were filled with chants and vivats for the victorious team.

Presidential praise and national pride

Les President Paul Biya, 93, posted on Facebook on Sunday night to congratulate the squad. He described the players as “valorous, talented and intrepid Lionnes Indomptables” and thanked them for the magnificent CAN 2026 trophy, calling the campaign a “well‑executed recital.”

The players, smiling but visibly tired, descended the aircraft accompanied by government members amid the cheers. They then toured the capital, proudly showing their first cup while thousands lined the routes, reinforcing the sense of national unity.
