Hugo Cuypers' MLS form draws Real Sociedad interest
Belgian striker Hugo Cuypers has netted 13 goals in 11 MLS matches for Chicago Fire, sparking speculation about a return to Europe. His prolific start comes as the club navigates a summer transfer window that could see him linked with clubs across the continent.
Within Chicago, attention has also focused on Polish forward Robert Lewandowski, who has been linked with the MLS side for months and could sign this summer. Cuypers said that Lewandowski’s arrival would force him to choose between staying in the starting lineup or leaving the club.
"If Lewandowski comes, I will be next to him in the starting eleven. Either I leave. It’s that simple," Cuypers told . The statement underscores his uncertainty about his future at Chicago Fire.
Spanish side Real Sociedad reportedly view Cuypers as an extra option alongside captain Mikel Oyarzabal, fresh from a Copa del Rey triumph, is preparing for a heavier schedule that includes Europa League fixtures.
Reflecting on his career, Cuypers laughed on RTBF that "my career has never been a calm, gently flowing stream; my club choices have always been a bit unpredictable." He added that he has never been called up by the Belgian national team because he is playing in MLS.
"We are really happy, I love life here; my son is growing up here, I feel very calm," Cuypers said, adding that becoming a father reshapes his priorities. He also claimed that compared with his time in Belgium, he is now a better player mentally and tactically, understanding the game better and managing his efforts more intelligently.
