Iran draws 2-2 with New Zealand, Uruguay 1-1 Saudi Arabia

Iran and New Zealand finished 2-2 in their World Cup Group G clash at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles. Uruguay and Saudi Arabia also shared points, drawing 1-1 in Group H. Iran came from behind twice, with Rezaeian scoring the first equaliser and Mohebi heading the second. New Zealand took the lead twice through Just, who was named match MVP. Captain Taremi rallied his side after a difficult pre‑tournament period marked by logistical issues, visa problems and protests. Mohebi, a former Inter player, saw his curling effort hit the upright on a counter‑attack. Saudi Arabia opened the scoring when Al Amri capitalised on a mistake by former Lazio keeper Muslera. Uruguay equalised in the 80th minute as Maxi Araújo reacted to a rebound from goalkeeper Alowais after a Viñas effort. Coach Bielsa left Darwin Núñez, a former Liverpool player, in the dressing room at halftime, a move that coincided with Uruguay dominating the second half. Both Group G and Group H are now level, with Egypt and Belgium also drawing in Group G and Spain and Cape Verde drawing in Group H. The results leave the opening stage of the World Cup tightly contested. Bielsa noted that Uruguay’s attacking problem remains, despite creating chances.
