Ismaël Koné breaks leg as Canada beats Qatar 6‑0

Canadian midfielder Ismaël Koné suffered a broken leg early in the second half of Canada’s FIFA World Cup match against Qatar on Thursday at BC Place, where a red‑clad crowd of 52,479 watched. Canada responded by thumping Qatar 6‑0, marking the nation’s first ever men’s World Cup victory. Koné posted an inspirational message on Instagram, writing, “Our brotherhood is everything to me. What you guys did yesterday will stay with me forever. I’ll be back very soon and we’ll keep making more memories together.” He expressed confidence in his recovery and dedication to the squad. Koné, who plays for Serie A side Sassuolo, has scored six goals in 35 games this season. Canada coach Jesse Marsch said, “Your heart goes out to (Koné), and everybody’s a little shaken by the whole experience, because of the nature of the injury, and also because Ismaël is a big part of the heart of our team.” He added that Koné’s absence will be a big loss for the side. Defender Assim Madibo received a red card for the tackle that broke Koné’s leg. The Qatar player walked off to jeering chants of “Shame!” from the home crowd, leaving Qatar with nine men. Nathan Saliba entered the field as Koné’s substitute and described the task as challenging. Six minutes after coming on he struck a free‑kick that hit the post and produced a 4‑0 lead for Canada. Saliba said, “I just had to do it. It’s like throwing a baby in the ocean and he figures out how to swim.” He formed his fingers into an eight – Koné’s number – and held the midfielder’s jersey aloft for the crowd. The Canadian squad visited Koné in the hospital later that night. Defender Moise Bombito, who fractured his left leg while playing for Nice in October, posted a photo of Koné mugging from his hospital bed. Defender Alistair Johnston noted Koné’s speed and dribbling will be missed, saying, “For us to be at our best, he’s a big part of it. But, look, it’s given us now something else to play for.”
