Jan Ceulemans says Belgium need Courtois to avoid early exit
Former Belgium international Jan Ceulemans reviewed the Red Devils' opening World Cup fixtures – a draw with Iran and a provisional 2‑6 result – and warned that without goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois the team would already be eliminated in the group stage.
Ceulemans, an ex‑Rode Duivel, offered his analysis of the tournament's early phase. He is known for his long playing career with the Belgium national team.
He described the first two matches as a complete miss of the World Cup start. The assessment highlights the disappointment after the opening games.
“Courtois is the only one playing at the level we expect from him,” Ceulemans said after reviewing the performances. The quote underscores his view of the goalkeeper’s importance.
“Without him we would already be home for the same money,” he added, stressing the team's reliance on Courtois. The statement reflects the perceived impact of his absence.
The next crucial group encounter pits Belgium against New Zealand. This match will determine whether the Red Devils can recover before the tournament progresses.
A positive result against New Zealand could revive Belgium's hopes. The team will need to translate Ceulemans' analysis into improved play on the pitch.
