Jérémy Doku welcomes son Praise amid World Cup leave

Manchester City winger Jérémy Doku and his wife Shireen Raymond announced the birth of their first child, son Praise, on Instagram on Tuesday, hours after the Belgian forward left the World Cup squad in London to be with his family.

Doku had started Belgium’s opening Group G encounter, a hard‑fought 1‑1 stalemate against Egypt. He was then informed that his wife Shireen had gone into labour earlier than anticipated in London.

The Belgian Football Association granted him immediate leave, allowing him to board a flight and miss Belgium’s subsequent 0‑0 draw with Iran. He also recovered from a minor respiratory illness during his brief absence.

French television channel L’Équipe faced global backlash after presenter France Pierron labelled Doku’s temporary departure “disgusting”. The network issued a formal public apology following the criticism.

On Instagram, Doku wrote, “Thank you to everyone for the love, prayers and kind messages over the past few days.” He added, “Shireen and Praise are doing great, and my heart is full of gratitude…Every good and perfect gift is from above. James 1:17.”

Shireen Raymond posted, “The best birth partner imaginable by the way! We couldn’t have done it without you papa.” She praised her husband publicly after the birth in London.

An official statement from Belgium’s camp confirmed Doku has already caught a return flight to the United States. He rejoined Rudi Garcia’s squad at their training base to continue preparations.

The immediate objective is to regain full match fitness before Belgium’s decisive Group G finale against New Zealand on Friday. The winger’s pace and dribbling are considered vital for the Red Devils’ final group‑stage match.

After the World Cup, Doku will enjoy a brief summer recess before reporting to Manchester City’s City Football Academy. Incoming Manchester City manager Enzo Maresca is awaiting his integration into a newly remodelled frontline.
