Joao Felix backs Julian Alvarez amid Barcelona interest

🇪🇸 yesterday
Julian Alvarez’s future at Atletico Madrid has become a flashpoint after Barcelona’s reported interest, prompting former teammate Joao Felix to publicly support the Argentine striker. The comments came on the sidelines of Portugal’s 5‑0 World Cup win over Uzbekistan, intensifying the transfer row. Joao Felix told COPE that Alvarez “must have his reasons for saying that… things happen there that only he knows about and people on the outside don’t know,” adding that he wishes the striker happiness. The Portuguese forward made the remarks after Portugal’s 5‑0 victory over Uzbekistan at the FIFA World Cup. Photo by Carlos Rodrigues/Getty Images captured Felix during the interview. Atletico Madrid CEO Miguel Angel Gil Marin condemned Barcelona’s pursuit of Alvarez and criticised the striker’s public comments made during Argentina’s World Cup celebrations. Gil Marin also announced that the club intends to lodge a formal complaint with FIFA over the alleged poaching. Photo by Eric Alonso/Getty Images showed Gil Marin speaking at a press conference. Julian Alvarez remains under contract with Atletico Madrid until 2030, with the club repeatedly pointing to his €500 million release clause when questioned about a possible exit. Despite media speculation, Atletico maintains that the forward is not available for sale. The Argentine previously spent a season on loan at Barcelona, a stint that ended amid a complicated relationship with Atletico Madrid. He also endured a difficult spell under coach Diego Simeone before eventually leaving the club. As the dispute escalates, Atletico Madrid says it will continue to deny any availability while pursuing the FIFA complaint. Felix’s supportive comments, though vague, have added fuel to speculation about what may lie behind Alvarez’s desire for a move.
