Joël Veltman rejects Brighton offer, eyes summer move

34‑year‑old Dutch defender Joël Veltman has turned down a contract extension from Brighton & Hove Albion, saying he will not accept the proposal ‘for now’ and hopes to make a move in the summer, with a free return to the Netherlands possible while clubs in Spain and Germany also show interest.

Veltman’s contract with Brighton was set to expire, and the club presented a renewal offer. He reflected on the proposal for a period, describing the discussions as ‘positive talks’, before deciding not to sign.

Speculation has repeatedly linked the defender with a return to his former club Ajax. A rumor on Friday suggested his wife was preventing a move back to Amsterdam, which Veltman dismissed on Instagram. He wrote, “Haha, and I am Sinterklaas. Fake news!”

The Athletic reported that Brighton were keen to retain Veltman despite the squad’s recent loss of seniority under manager Fabian Hürzeler. The departures of Adam Webster and Solly March, together with James Milner’s retirement, left a gap in experience. Veltman’s presence was described as a valuable asset for the team.

During his six seasons in England, Veltman amassed 191 official appearances for Brighton. The defender’s record underscores his role as a regular starter in the Premier League.

The 34‑year‑old has earned 28 caps for the Netherlands senior national team. His international experience adds weight to any potential suitor.

A free transfer back to the Netherlands is not ruled out, and clubs in Spain and Germany have also been mentioned as interested parties. Veltman indicated he hopes to make a decisive step in the summer window.
