Johan Manzambi stars as Switzerland beats Canada 2-1

Switzerland secured the Group B title at the World Cup by defeating hosts Canada 2‑1, with Johan Manzambi providing both an assist and the second goal after coming on as a substitute. Rubén Vargas opened the scoring early in the second half, while Canada’s Promise David pulled one back before Manzambi restored the lead. In the opening half, Swiss striker Breel Embolo missed a clear chance against Canadian goalkeeper Maxime Crépeau. Canada generated chances through former Feyenoord forward Cyle Larin, forward Jonathan David and Ali Ahmed, but the half ended goalless. Switzerland emerged from the dressing room with intensity, and Rubén Vargas struck within a minute of the second‑half restart to make it 1‑0. Vargas had also found the net earlier in the tournament against Bosnia. Midfielder Johan Manzambi, who had previously scored twice as a substitute against Bosnia, entered the match and set up Vargas’s goal with an assist. He then added the second Swiss goal, completing his contribution of a goal and an assist. Canadian coach Jesse March responded with substitutions in an effort to revive his side. Substitute Promise David scored with his first touch, reducing the deficit to 2‑1. Switzerland held on to claim the Group B winner’s spot, while Canada secured second place and reached the World Cup knockout stage for the first time. The 20‑year‑old Manzambi, who impressed this season with German club Freiburg, has accumulated three goals and one assist in the tournament. Freiburg reached the Europa League final this season, losing 0‑3 to Aston Villa.
