Jonathan David hat‑trick fuels Canada’s 6‑0 win as Mexico qualify

Canada secured a historic 6‑0 victory over Qatar on Tuesday in Vancouver, with Juventus striker Jonathan David netting a hat‑trick, while Mexico clinched a 1‑0 win against South Korea in Guadalajara to become the first team into the 2026 World Cup round of 32. Canada entered the match after a 1‑1 draw with Bosnia and Herzegovina. The 6‑0 win over Qatar placed them atop Group B and left them needing only a draw against Switzerland to qualify. Juventus striker Jonathan David scored a hat‑trick, raising his tally to 42 goals in 79 appearances and tying him for the tournament’s top scorer. He became the second Juventus player to net a World Cup hat‑trick after Paolo Rossi. The feat also made him the first forward from an Italian club to achieve a World Cup hat‑trick in the 21st century. Cyle Larin opened the scoring after a David assist, and Saliba later added a goal while holding up his shirt in tribute to injured teammate Ismaël Koné. An own goal by Al Manai and a second David strike completed the 6‑0 scoreline. A high‑impact challenge by Qatar defender Madibo on Sassuolo midfielder Ismaël Koné caused fractures to both tibia and fibula. Koné was taken to hospital, will undergo surgery and faces a four‑ to five‑month lay‑off, ending his World Cup participation. Madibo visited the Canadian dressing room to apologise personally. In Guadalajara, Luis Romo scored the only goal after South Korean goalkeeper Kim Seung‑Gyu mishandled a ball and collided with a teammate, leaving the net open. Mexico’s Raúl Rangel later made several key saves to preserve the lead. The 1‑0 victory gave Mexico six points, secured top spot in Group A and made them the first nation to qualify for the round of 32.
