José Mourinho appoints Sami Khedira as Real Madrid assistant

José Mourinho has been officially introduced as the new head coach of Real Madrid. He immediately announced that former midfielder Sami Khedira will return to the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu as his assistant, starting on 1 July.

Mourinho’s appointment arrived on the recommendation of club president Florentino Perez. Perez had just been re‑elected as president of Real Madrid when the announcement was made.

Mourinho’s brief outlines a clean‑up of the dressing‑room and the assembly of a new playing squad. His primary targets are to reclaim the La Liga crown from Catalonia and, according to the plan, to focus heavily on the Champions League.

Sami Khedira will join the technical staff as an assistant to Mourinho. The former midfielder’s contract is set to commence on 1 July.

Khedira has spent the past five years in football retirement. During that period he worked as an analyst for German television.

He also held a role as sporting advisor at VfB Stuttgart. The position was part of his post‑playing career activities.

Khedira earned 77 caps for the German national team. After progressing through the youth ranks at VfB Stuttgart, he broke into the first team, transferred to Real Madrid and played there from 2010 to 2015 under Mourinho for three seasons.

Mourinho will now begin reshaping the squad with Khedira’s assistance, marking the start of pre‑season preparations. Their combined effort is expected to drive Real Madrid toward domestic and European success.
