Josep Martinez backs Denzel Dumfries to excel at Real Madrid

Real Madrid have completed the signing of Denzel Dumfries from Inter Milan, with the Dutch full-back set to join the Merengue club in July. The defender is one of three new defensive reinforcements for Carlo Ancelotti’s side, alongside Marc Cucurella and Ibrahima Konaté, all of whom bring significant top-level experience. Former Inter Milan goalkeeper Josep Martinez, who played alongside Dumfries, has publicly endorsed the transfer. Speaking to Diario AS, Martinez described Dumfries as a “tremendous footballer” and a “great signing” for Real Madrid. He highlighted the Dutchman’s physicality, speed, and leadership qualities, stating that he will add a new dimension to the team’s right flank. Martinez dismissed concerns about Dumfries adapting to a four-man defensive system, emphasizing his versatility. “He has performed exceptionally well in that system over the last few years,” Martinez said. “I don’t think playing in a back four will be a problem for him because he’s an intelligent, versatile footballer who knows how to adapt.” The Spanish goalkeeper also praised Dumfries’ defensive contributions, particularly his ability to win duels and perform under pressure. “His defensive performances against top-level wingers were outstanding,” Martinez noted, recalling Inter’s Champions League run that included victories over Barcelona and Bayern Munich. Martinez drew a comparison between Dumfries and Ferland Mendy, citing their similar profiles as dynamic full-backs who provide constant up-and-down movement. “His profile is somewhat similar to the best version of Mendy because of his constant up-and-down movement and the fact that he’s difficult to beat defensively,” he said. The goalkeeper, who also played with Ibrahima Konaté at RB Leipzig, extended his praise to the French defender. Martinez described Konaté as “one of the best in the world in his position” and a “luxury signing” for Real Madrid, reinforcing the club’s defensive upgrades ahead of the new season.
