Kieran McKenna’s £8m compensation clause blocks moves

Kieran McKenna will cost any club £8 million in compensation if they appoint him within the next twelve months. The 40‑year‑old former Ipswich Town manager stepped down this month to spend more time with his family, leaving the Tractor Boys with a sizable payout clause.

Ipswich Town have safeguarded the triple‑promotion‑winning manager with a compensation clause, ensuring they receive the £8 million even though McKenna is leaving Portman Road. The club’s protection means the payout is triggered despite his voluntary departure.

There is a chance the fee could be reduced nearer the 1 July 2025 cut‑off, but the current figure remains £8 million. The amount previously discouraged Bournemouth from pursuing McKenna before they appointed Marco Rose.

Fulham kept McKenna on their shortlist after Marco Silva’s exit from Craven Cottage this month, weighing the same compensation demand. The club’s interest illustrates how the clause continues to shape the market for the former Ipswich boss.

McKenna, a former Manchester United assistant, quit Ipswich after guiding the Tractor Boys back to the Premier League at the first attempt. He assumed charge in 2021 while the side were in League One and delivered three promotions in four seasons, two of which reached the top flight.

Born in London and raised in Northern Ireland, McKenna signed a four‑year contract in 2024 that leaves him with two years remaining. He recorded 105 wins from 222 games, and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Gary O'Neil are now listed as candidates to replace him as the club intensifies its search this week.
