Koeman's farewell: pride in a career versus a missed World Cup dream
Ronald Koeman posted an Instagram statement on Tuesday night, confirming his immediate exit as Netherlands head coach after the team's loss to Morocco. He juxtaposes his lifelong pride in football—highlighted by spells at Vitesse, Ajax and FC Barcelona—with the disappointment of ending his tenure without a World Cup.
Koeman reflected on his career, noting the privilege of working for clubs such as Vitesse, Ajax, Benfica, PSV, Valencia, AZ, Feyenoord, Southampton, Everton and FC Barcelona, as well as two periods with the Dutch national team. "When I look back on my career I feel mainly pride and gratitude," he wrote.
He said the way his period with Oranje ended caused him great pain, adding that the collective dream of a World Cup that would write history was not fulfilled. "We all dreamed of a World Cup in which we would write history. That did not happen. No one is more disappointed than I," Koeman said.

Koeman emphasized the responsibility he always felt as the national coach, stating that it was a burden he has always carried. "As head coach I always felt that responsibility and I will always feel it," he declared. He explained that recent years taught him that life holds more than football, describing health as priceless and praising his wife Bartina for supporting him despite her own illness. "Football has been my life, but health is priceless. My wife Bartina, despite her own illness, has supported me every day," he wrote. The coach thanked his players for their effort, character and trust, and also expressed gratitude to his staff, the KNVB, behind‑the‑scenes employees and the clubs where he worked, highlighting the supporters above all. "Your effort, character and trust motivated me every day. Thanks also to my staff, the KNVB, all behind‑the‑scenes staff and the clubs I have worked for, and especially the supporters," Koeman said. Finally, Koeman admitted he would have liked to finish his stint with a world title, but affirmed that pride in his football journey outweighs the unfulfilled dream. "Naturally I would have liked to end my period with a world title. That dream remains unfulfilled, but above all I feel pride for everything football has given me," he concluded.
