Koeman’s Netherlands substitutions at World Cup spark debate on Dutch tradition

Ronald Koeman’s three substitutions during the 2-2 World Cup draw with Japan on June 16, 2026, reignited a Dutch tradition: fierce debate over national team coaching choices. Koeman removed Crysencio Summerville and Donyell Malen early in the second half, replacing them with Teun Koopmeiners and Memphis Depay in search of ‘ball security,’ as he described it after the match. Japan seized the initiative, equalising late to force a draw. The substitutions came during a drink break in Dallas, where Japan coach Hajime Moriyasu had instructed his team to take risks. With only three Dutch attackers remaining, Moriyasu’s side saw Summerville and Malen shift wide, while Koopmeiners and Depay offered no direct pace. Japan’s pressure paid off in stoppage time. Koeman’s changes also included Quinten Timber for Tijjani Reijnders, Nathan Aké for Ryan Gravenberch, and Cody Gakpo for Brian Brobbey, none of which yielded positive results. The criticism of Koeman’s substitution strategy echoed complaints faced by predecessors, prompting his response: „You can judge them afterwards, but these are the choices you make.” Dutch fans have long scrutinised national team substitutions. Dick Advocaat’s decision to replace Arjen Robben with Paul Bosvelt at Euro 2004 remains infamous. Robben, who had played just three months prior, reacted visibly as the Netherlands lost 2-3 to the Czech Republic. The moment became so ingrained in Dutch football culture that a satirical art installation appeared at the Media Park in 2024, commemorating the switch with the inscription: ‘In memory of the substitution of Arjen Robben for Paul Bosvelt.’ The debate over substitutions extends beyond recent history. Rinus Michels’ decision to replace Rob Rensenbrink with René van de Kerkhof in the 1974 World Cup final remains controversial. Johan Neeskens later reflected that Michels’ choice may have been influenced by Johan Cruijff, though he acknowledged uncertainty about the decision-making process. Frank de Boer’s substitutions at Euro 2021 also drew criticism. With Matthijs de Ligt sent off against the Czech Republic, De Boer’s prolonged huddle with assistants Van Nistelrooy, Stekelenburg, Lodewijks, and Lodeweges, plus fitness coach Wormhoudt, culminated in Donyell Malen’s removal for Quincy Promes. The change left the Netherlands without an attacking anchor, and they lost 0-2 shortly after. Louis van Gaal’s tactical substitutions have also left a mark. In 2014, he replaced Jasper Cillessen with Tim Krul during the World Cup quarter-final shootout against Costa Rica, a move that helped the Netherlands advance. Krul’s penalty heroics became legendary, though Krul did not feature in the semi-final against Argentina. Van Gaal repeated the pattern in 2022, introducing Wout Weghorst against Argentina in Qatar. Weghorst’s brace rescued a 2-0 deficit, securing a 2-2 draw. His impact underscored the potential of well-timed substitutions, even if Koeman’s choices in Dallas did not yield the same outcome. Historically, substitutions have defined tournaments. Joachim Löw’s introduction of Mario Götze in the 2014 World Cup final, replacing Miroslav Klose, led to Götze’s extra-time winner against Argentina. Fernando Santos’ decision to bring on Eder at Euro 2016 also proved decisive, with the substitute scoring the winning goal against France. The Euro 2000 final between France and Italy saw Roger Lemerre’s double substitution change the game. Sylvain Wiltord and David Trezeguet entered the pitch in Rotterdam, with Wiltord equalising and Trezeguet scoring the winner. Lemerre later recalled Pirès’ assist for the second goal, highlighting the influence of late changes.
