Koeman uses 18 players at USA 2026 as Oranje rotation lesson sticks

Ronald Koeman has used 18 different players across Oranje’s first two matches at the USA 2026 tournament. The Dutch head coach’s rotation policy contrasts sharply with his approach at the 2024 European Championship, where several high-profile names barely featured. In the 5-1 win over Sweden, Koeman introduced Guus Til from the bench, a decision he defended publicly. ,,I made the choice for Guus, who is doing well,’’ Koeman explained in Houston. ,,I also thought he was good again today in the way he presses and plays.’’ Justin Kluivert, who had been recovering from knee surgery, was left out entirely. Kluivert’s fitness was scrutinised before the tournament. Koeman allowed him to join the squad only after assessing his condition during a late Premier League return with Bournemouth. ,,I have to say: I was positively surprised,’’ Koeman said. The coach’s preference for Til over Kluivert reflects Oranje’s new rotation-first philosophy. At the 2024 Euros, Oranje’s squad of 26 saw key players like Brian Brobbey, Steven Bergwijn and Ryan Gravenberch receive minimal minutes. Gravenberch played zero minutes, a scenario Koeman now avoids. Oranje’s current squad includes players like Teun Koopmeiners, who started against Sweden due to Frenkie de Jong’s absence, and can feature in multiple positions. Marten de Roon has emerged as an informal leader among the substitutes, a role he missed at the 2024 Euros after injury ruled him out late. Players like Mats Wieffer and Lutsharel Geertruida have embraced their roles, contributing energetically in training sessions following the 5-1 victory. Wout Weghorst, Jorrel Hato and Kluivert remain among those yet to play minutes. Weghorst’s impact in 2024—scoring the winner as a substitute against Poland—keeps expectations high. Koeman acknowledged Memphis Depay’s acceptance of a reduced role, stating: ,,He accepts his role now. I don’t know for how long, but he does.’’ Koeman’s rotation strategy extends to training, where large goals and high-intensity drills replace small-sided games. ,,Small goals frustrate players,’’ he noted. ,,They want to shoot on goal and score, which is important in a tournament that lasts weeks.’’ Oranje’s next match is scheduled for Thursday. The possibility of a reserve-team friendly was discussed but not confirmed. For now, substitutes train with intensity, turning every session into a competitive opportunity.
