Leandro Trossard’s uneven display sparks debate among former Red Devils

Belgium’s 1-1 draw with Egypt saw Leandro Trossard once again at the centre of heated discussion after his uneven performance in Cairo. The Arsenal attacker’s backheel to Thomas Meunier, which went uncredited as an assist by the Belgian FA, showcased his technical quality. Yet outside that moment, Trossard struggled to influence play, ending the match as the only forward to complete the full 90 minutes—a sign coach Rudi Garcia saw enough to keep faith in him.

On RTL Sports, former internationals Thomas Chatelle and Anthony Vanden Borre questioned whether Trossard is delivering at international level. Chatelle highlighted the striker’s inconsistent record with the national team despite his club accolades: “Leandro Trossard’s history with the national team is complicated. He hasn’t managed to turn things around despite arriving with a Champions League runner-up medal and a Premier League winner’s medal.”

Vanden Borre echoed the criticism, urging Trossard to take responsibility when given opportunities: “When you’re handed the keys by a coach like this, take them and own it! What’s our Plan B here? A Trossard must make more of an impact in these moments. Charles De Ketelaere was transparent—it was totally insufficient.”

With Jérémy Doku sidelined by fitness issues and Romelu Lukaku still regaining match sharpness, Belgium’s attacking options remain limited. The channels through Trossard and De Ketelaere have repeatedly failed to deliver, leaving the team searching for alternatives.

Trossard’s profile differs sharply from Doku’s explosive dribbling, a contrast that works against him. Operating in a less fluid system than at Arsenal, the former Brighton player relied on overlapping runs from Thomas Meunier but was also forced to cover defensive gaps, complicating his role.

Vanden Borre questioned whether Rudi Garcia has a viable Plan B in attack. The squad’s construction suggests otherwise, with Dodi Lukebakio’s recent friendly goals reminding observers of his flair and willingness to take risks. Lukebakio must now prove he can replicate that energy while maintaining defensive discipline.

Alexis Saelemaekers has refined his tactical awareness during six seasons in Italy, emerging as a more complete player. Yet Garcia opted for Trossard over Saelemaekers, underlining the coach’s current preference in the forward line.
