Leandro Trossard shrugs off criticism from Belgian fans after Rudi Garcia praise

Leandro Trossard dismissed concerns over his perceived unpopularity among Belgian supporters following his latest international call-up. Speaking to reporters at the Seattle Sounders training centre in Renton, the Arsenal midfielder addressed criticism of his performances with the Red Devils.

Trossard admitted his role under Rudi Garcia differs from his club duties at Arsenal. While he excels in possession and linking play at club level, his international contributions have been labelled inconsistent by Belgian fans. "Rudi Garcia expects me to maintain balance, keep possession, and create connections between players," he explained.

The midfielder played the full 90 minutes in Belgium’s 1-1 draw with Egypt. Despite a subdued display, Garcia described his performance as "magnifique". Trossard himself called it a "correct match" in a post-game press conference. "It’s always nice to receive such praise," he said. "I thought I played well, too bad I couldn’t help the team with a goal."

Trossard began the match on the right flank before switching positions with Jérémy Doku, who struggled. "It doesn’t bother me. I can play on either side depending on the match scenario," he said. The move came as he addressed persistent criticism aimed at him while wearing the Red Devils shirt.

"My priority is to fulfil both offensive and defensive tasks for the team," Trossard stated. "Of course, I’d love to add goals and assists, but my main job is to play for the collective. What people say externally doesn’t concern me much." He added, "As long as the coach is happy with my performance, that’s all that matters."

Garcia has started Trossard nine times in 12 international appearances under his management. The Belgian coach’s confidence appears unshaken by public opinion. "I feel the coach’s trust, and it helps me grow in the national team," Trossard said. "I hope to improve throughout the tournament, just like the whole team."

He will feature again in Belgium’s next match against Iran, regardless of external perceptions. "I don’t pay attention to what the public or observers think," Trossard reiterated. His next appearance will test whether Garcia’s backing translates into continued selection despite fan sentiment.

Trossard’s willingness to adapt positions and embrace a less glamorous role highlights his commitment to the Red Devils’ system. His technical profile remains undiminished, even if his impact isn’t always reflected in highlights or statistics.
