Leao hails Amorim, will decide Milan future after World Cup
Rafael Leao said on DAZN Italia that Portuguese coach Ruben Amorim is “a very good coach” and that he will decide his future with AC Milan after the 2026 World Cup, having just scored Portugal’s fifth goal in a 5‑0 win over Uzbekistan.
Leao opened the scoring for Portugal in the Group K match against Uzbekistan, netting the fifth goal with a ferocious first‑time finish into the roof after intercepting a roll across. The 5‑0 victory was played at Houston Stadium in Houston, Texas on 23 June 2026.
He was omitted from the starting line‑up for Portugal’s opening 1‑1 draw with the Democratic Republic of Congo. He also began the Uzbekistan game on the bench before being introduced and scoring.
In Serie A, Leao found the net against US Cremonese on 1 March 2026, sealing the win with a first‑time strike at Stadio Giovanni Zini in Cremona. The goal marked his first appearance on the scoresheet for AC Milan that season.
Leao appeared on the substitutes’ bench ahead of AC Milan’s 24 May 2026 clash with Cagliari Calcio at the Giuseppe Meazza Stadium. The match preview highlighted his continued involvement despite limited minutes.
Speaking to DAZN Italia, Leao said, “I have to celebrate this with my family, because it has been a difficult season for me,” adding that injuries and the club’s campaign had weighed on him. He recalled past friction with former coach Max Allegri, noting he was used out of position as a centre‑forward and clashed after early substitutions.
Leao also remarked, “I work for myself, my teammates and my coach. I’m happy that I was able to help my team, to have minutes on the pitch, it was important.” He concluded that Ruben Amorim “did well in Portugal, it didn’t go the way he wanted at Manchester United, but he remains a great coach,” and that he will decide his Milan future after the World Cup.
