Leeds' £20m sale of Struijk: a lifeline for PSR compliance

🇬🇧

Leeds United have completed the £20 million transfer of defender Pascal Struijk to Brighton & Hove Albion on 30 June, the final day of the club’s financial year, a move that secures compliance with the Premier League’s Profit & Sustainability Rules.

Leeds needed to reduce losses after spending more than £100 million on new signings last summer, and the sale of Struijk was essential to avoid a potential points penalty and to meet PSR requirements. The club confirmed that the single transaction would keep them within the limits of the three‑year accounting window ending 30 June 2026.

Brighton, having sold centre‑back Jan Paul van Hecke to Tottenham for £52 million, were actively seeking defensive reinforcements, prompting their acquisition of Struijk. The £20 million fee addressed the gap left by van Hecke’s departure and bolstered Brighton’s back line.

Struijk, 26, turned down an improved contract at Elland Road and opted to move on, signing for Brighton after the deal was finalised. His decision came despite Leeds offering a contract extension.

Leeds issued a statement saying: “As was communicated at the end of the 2025-2026 season by chairman Paraag Marathe, it was explained how there would be both incomings and outgoings over the course of the current transfer window. Last summer, the decision was taken to keep all key players at Elland Road, to give the club the best possible chance of Premier League survival, with the expectation that player sales would be needed to remain PSR compliant.”

The club highlighted that their higher‑than‑expected 14th‑place finish and run to the FA Cup semi‑final vindicated the strategy, noting they lost only five of their last 25 league games and finished eight points ahead of relegated West Ham. Leeds also pointed to the increased income from the Struijk sale as a factor in meeting PSR limits.

Looking ahead, Leeds are targeting Harry Wilson on a free transfer from Fulham and have identified Julian Brandt, who is leaving Borussia Dortmund, as a potential addition to strengthen the squad.
