Lille’s move for Önal puts NEC’s Sano transfer in doubt

🇳🇱

French club LOSC Lille have tabled an offer for NEC Nijmegen striker Basar Önal, a move that could soon become the latest six-figure transfer in the Eredivisie. The clubs are understood to be close to finalising terms, with Önal already training with Lille ahead of any agreement. NEC had been in talks with TSG 1899 Hoffenheim over a potential move for midfielder Kodai Sano, but Lille’s intervention has introduced a new variable into the equation.

Lille’s interest in Önal follows a pattern of scouting Eredivisie talent, with the French side seeking to bolster their attacking options. Önal, 24, has scored 12 goals in 48 appearances for NEC this season, making him one of the club’s most consistent performers. His form has drawn attention beyond the Eredivisie, with Lille now positioning themselves as serious suitors.

NEC’s pursuit of Sano, meanwhile, was driven by their need to strengthen midfield depth. The Japanese international had featured regularly for the club this season, contributing two goals and three assists in 25 league appearances. The arrival of Önal could prompt a rethink in Nijmegen, particularly if Lille’s offer meets NEC’s valuation.

For Lille, securing Önal would represent a strategic acquisition in Ligue 1. The club has prioritised young, high-potential forwards in recent transfer windows, and Önal fits that profile. His versatility in attack—capable of playing as a striker or second striker—adds further appeal to Lille’s project under their current management.

Önal’s absence from NEC’s training session on Monday was noted by observers, a sign that his mind may already be elsewhere. While NEC have not yet issued an official statement, the club’s hierarchy is expected to engage with Lille’s proposal in the coming days. The transfer window remains open, but both clubs will aim to conclude discussions before the deadline.

The potential double move—Önal to Lille and Sano to Hoffenheim—would reshape NEC’s squad dynamics. If Lille’s bid is accepted, NEC could accelerate their pursuit of a replacement, while Sano’s exit would leave a void in midfield that may require immediate attention.

For Önal, a transfer to Lille would mark a significant step in his career. The French top flight is a competitive environment, and a successful adaptation could elevate his profile ahead of future opportunities. Lille, meanwhile, would gain a player with Eredivisie experience and a proven goal threat.
