Liverpool join Tottenham in Van Hecke transfer race

Liverpool have entered the transfer race for Brighton & Hove Albion defender Jan Paul van Hecke. The Reds join Tottenham Hotspur in pursuing the Dutch centre-back. Liverpool may replace Ibrahima Konaté, who will leave on a free transfer to Real Madrid this summer. The club currently has four centre-backs: Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez, Jeremy Jacquet and Giovanni Leoni, though Leoni is injured. Tottenham Hotspur have made two rejected bids for Van Hecke. Brighton & Hove Albion have set a valuation reportedly around £50 million. The Seagulls face a decision: secure a fee now or risk losing Van Hecke for free in 2027, with one year left on his contract. Van Hecke had a standout 2025/26 season, making 36 Premier League appearances, scoring three goals and providing three assists. His performances earned him recognition as one of the Premier League’s top ball-playing centre-backs. He also reinforced his place in the Netherlands national squad. Liverpool have made initial contact over a deal for Van Hecke. The club could push forward if the price aligns with their valuation. Brighton’s valuation remains firm, complicating Liverpool’s pursuit. Tottenham’s interest adds pressure to the situation. The club seeks to rebuild following a difficult 2025/26 season. Van Hecke’s future remains subject to intense transfer speculation this summer. Brighton & Hove Albion chief executive Paul Barber confirmed the club’s stance on the transfer. He stated the Seagulls are firm on their valuation. Brighton will decide whether to accept an offer or wait for a potential free transfer next year.
