Maduro defends Koeman's legacy amid dismissal controversy

🇳🇱

Former Dutch international Hedwiges Maduro publicly defended Ronald Koeman on ’s WK‑praat programme after the Netherlands were eliminated by Morocco at the World Cup, arguing that the former coach was not treated with respect during the post‑match press conference that followed.

Hedwiges Maduro took the floor on ’s WK‑praat programme to voice support for Ronald Koeman. He positioned himself as speaking on behalf of the former national coach.

During the press conference that followed the Netherlands‑Morocco World Cup match, journalist Valentijn Driessen asked whether Koeman had already submitted his resignation letter. The question was directed at the Dutch federation’s head coach.

Maduro said the question was permissible but criticised the tone in which it was asked. He stated, “You can ask a critical question, that’s part of it, but it’s about the tone. You usually hear from the question whether someone shows respect and I found that totally not.”

He continued, emphasizing Koeman’s status, “We forget that it’s Mr Ronald Koeman, he is a legend for the Netherlands. We all know he didn’t do well, that’s clear. You can be critical, but it’s really about the tone how you treat someone.”

A day after the World Cup exit, it was announced that Ronald Koeman would no longer continue as the Netherlands’ head coach. The 63‑year‑old trainer’s departure was confirmed by the Dutch football association.

The identity of Koeman’s successor has not been disclosed. The federation indicated that a replacement will be appointed in due course.
