World Cup
Majority of Portuguese fans exclude Ronaldo from starting XI vs Uzbekistan
A majority of Portuguese supporters do not want Cristiano Ronaldo in the starting XI for the FIFA World Cup match against Uzbekistan at 19:00 today. This follows Portugal’s 1-1 draw with the Democratic Republic of Congo in their opening group game.
Cristiano Ronaldo has come under renewed scrutiny after failing to score in his last 10 World Cup matches, with 33 shots without a goal. His only recent World Cup goal came from the penalty spot against Ghana at the 2022 edition.
João Neves of Paris Saint-Germain defended Ronaldo’s inclusion, stating: "We know what Cristiano has done for our national team and for football. But right now, I feel from his side and the team’s side that he is one of us, a player to help the team. He is not different from the others. He is there to contribute like everyone else. He played very well; the whole team delivered an excellent performance."
A Bola’s informal reader poll for the ideal XI against Uzbekistan shows no place for Ronaldo. Gonçalo Ramos, the Paris Saint-Germain striker, is preferred in attack instead. The consultation reflects fan sentiment rather than an official survey.
Roberto Martinez, Portugal’s head coach, remains the final decision-maker. He is also reportedly in contract negotiations with the club where Ronaldo plays.
The match kicks off at 19:00 and will be broadcast live on Walfoot.be.
