Manchester United Lead Race for West Ham Midfielder Matheus Fernandes
Manchester United have emerged as the frontrunners to sign Matheus Fernandes after Liverpool withdrew from the race. The 21‑year‑old Portuguese midfielder remains a West Ham United player as of 12 June 2026. Liverpool’s exit leaves United as the most likely destination for the Premier League talent.
Liverpool had expressed genuine interest in Fernandes and viewed him as a prospect who could develop into a star at Anfield. The club had previously floated a signing after his debut campaign with Southampton in May 2025. Liverpool hoped to pay significantly less than the £80 million figure now quoted at West Ham, but United’s willingness to meet a higher price pushed the asking price up, prompting Liverpool to exit the race.
West Ham United, who signed Fernandes in August 2025, are demanding a fee in the region of £85 million following their relegation from the Premier League. The London side has indicated a desire to retain him for their Championship campaign. Nevertheless, a departure is widely expected this summer as the club looks to capitalise on his market value.
Alongside United, Paris Saint‑Germain, Arsenal and Real Madrid have all been reported as interested in the midfielder. West Ham eventually won the race to secure Fernandes and he has once again proven himself at Premier League level.
Manchester United have reportedly initiated official contact with Fernandes’ representatives to prepare a formal bid. The club is positioning itself to complete the transfer before the summer window closes.
