Manchester United poised to sign Mateus Fernandes for £80m
Manchester United are reported to be close to securing Mateus Fernandes from West Ham United in a deal that could rise to £80 million. United are described as increasingly confident of completing the signing.
Fernandes arrived at West Ham United from Southampton last summer for an initial £38 million fee. Southampton retained a 15 percent sell‑on clause, adding complexity to West Ham’s valuation.
He made 38 Premier League appearances for West Ham United last season, scoring five goals and providing four assists. The statistics highlight his end product and Premier League experience.
Arsenal have been actively pursuing Fernandes, but their reluctance to meet West Ham United’s asking price has opened the door for United. Real Madrid have entered the race after José Mourinho requested the Spanish club to consider a move for the midfielder.
West Ham United’s relegation to the Championship leaves them with little choice but to sell Fernandes. The club may need to finalize a transfer this month to satisfy Premier League regulations, and Fernandes is expected to depart this summer.
Manchester United, under Michael Carrick, are prepared to invest in a midfielder who can run, pass, press and develop further. Securing Fernandes ahead of Arsenal and Real Madrid would also carry symbolic weight for the club.
