Manchester United Rethink Midfield Targets After £120m Anderson Block

Manchester United's midfield search has shifted after Nottingham Forest rejected a bid exceeding £120 million for Elliot Anderson. The rejection signals that United are no longer in the market for the midfielder. United now face a window that demands sharper judgement.

Elliot Anderson has been United’s first‑choice target for months, but Forest’s price tag puts him beyond the club’s reach. United acknowledge that desire alone cannot bend the market.

Mateus Fernandes has emerged as a priority target, with United expected to submit an opening bid. West Ham United value him at around £80 million, a figure United consider beyond their restraint. The club admires Fernandes but is not prepared to meet that demand.

Alex Scott is another name on United’s list. Bournemouth place a £60 million price on the midfielder and insist he is not for sale, though a renewal could include a release clause near £75 million. United must weigh talent against value in a market that punishes desperation.

Other midfield options under consideration include Carlos Baleba, Sandro Tonali, Adam Wharton and Sander Berge. Berge, previously assessed by United in 2024, offers a different profile, and Fulham would expect profit on the £25 million they paid Burnley. These names provide development upside without inflated fees.

Jadon Sancho’s confirmed free‑agent exit underscores United’s recent dysfunction. The player was signed from Borussia Dortmund in a €85 million deal in 2021 and now leaves without a fee despite an option to extend his contract. His departure highlights the cost of poor squad planning.

Goalkeeper Senne Lammens enjoyed an impressive debut season and is United’s undisputed first choice, while the backup situation remains unsettled. Altay Bayindir is expected to leave, Andre Onana returns from a Trabzonspor loan with limited suitors, and Radek Vitek may seek first‑team football. Tom Heaton remains third choice after a one‑year extension, and United have also explored free‑agent Karl Darlow and Sam Johnstone as alternatives.

Marcus Rashford’s future is complicated by Barcelona’s expired €30 million option and a weekly salary exceeding £300,000, which could delay any exit. United are also open to offers for Manuel Ugarte and Joshua Zirkzee. The club’s summer strategy focuses on correction rather than spectacle.

United must find players who fit the football, the finances and the future, resisting inflated fees and adding purposeful midfield depth. Discipline, rather than drama, will define this transfer window. Success will be measured by sensible moves, not by chasing unattainable numbers.
