Mario Stroeykens set to leave Anderlecht after 2028 exit clause

Mario Stroeykens will leave RSC Anderlecht this summer after triggering his 2028 exit clause. The 21-year-old midfielder, who extended his contract last season, now seeks a new challenge abroad.

The departure follows months of behind-the-scenes negotiations. Since December, Stroeykens’ entourage has actively explored transfer options, with Parma currently the most concrete lead. The Serie B club has monitored his progress closely and views him as a young talent with developmental upside.

French and German clubs have also shown interest. Multiple teams in both leagues have requested information and are closely tracking his situation. A move now appears inevitable rather than possible.

Stroeykens is a product of Anderlecht’s academy, rising through the youth ranks from Neerpede. His senior breakthrough came in 2021-22, when he scored as a 16-year-old against Oud-Heverlee Leuven. He has since made over 100 appearances for the first team, establishing himself as a key player.

Yet the midfielder feels he needs a new environment to progress further. A different league, culture, and competitive level are seen as essential for his development. His entourage believes he has reached his ceiling in Belgium, not due to a lack of ability, but because fresh challenges often unlock growth.

The comparison with Yari Verschaeren looms large. Verschaeren stayed loyal to Anderlecht but failed to make the expected international breakthrough despite undeniable talent. Injuries and sporting stagnation played a role. Stroeykens aims to avoid a similar fate.

At 21, he is at the age where many talents take the step to a bigger league. He has gained sufficient experience in the Jupiler Pro League, featured in European competitions, and been part of multiple first-team generations at Anderlecht.

His move will mark another chapter in Anderlecht’s youth exodus. The club stands to benefit from a significant transfer fee, aligning with the purpose of his contract extension — to secure compensation when he eventually leaves.
