Marseille fear a long spell out for Gouiri, already coping with Cornelius

In the eighteenth minute of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match between Algeria and Zambia, Algerian striker Amine Gouiri was forced to leave the field. The final result was 3-1 to Algeria. The injury comes as Olympique Marsiglia, 17th in Ligue 1, is already dealing with the absence of defender Derek Cornelius.

The striker complained of a problem in his left thigh and, despite an initial attempt to stay on the pitch, had to give way to Amin Chiakha. At the end of the match, Algeria’s coach Brahim Hemdani said: “We are on alert. We will wait before commenting. He has a discomfort in the quadriceps of his left thigh.”

For Olympique Marsiglia the news represents a new factor to monitor. The French club, currently 17th in Ligue 1, already has to cope with defender Derek Cornelius’s injury during the international break. Coach Bruno Genesio emphasized the need to assess the tests in the coming days.

Gouiri has been, so far, one of OM’s main offensive references. A prolonged absence would deprive Bruno Genesio of one of the most effective attacking options, especially as the schedule looks particularly demanding.

The 3-1 victory secured Algeria’s qualification for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, but Gouiri’s loss could jeopardize the national team’s ambitions in the final stage.
