Mbappé's penalty and handshake snub shape tense France‑Paraguay clash

🇫🇷
At the Parc des Princes, France faced Paraguay in a World Cup round‑of‑16 match that turned into a physical contest, with Les Bleus ultimately prevailing 1‑0 thanks to a solitary penalty from Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappé. The lone goal came from the spot in the second half, sealing France’s advance. Paraguay turned the encounter into a bruising, uncomfortable battle, refusing to allow France their usual free‑flowing style. Their strategy involved constant pressure, physical contact and attempts to disrupt the French rhythm. Throughout the match Kylian Mbappé was repeatedly targeted by the Paraguayan players. Despite the pressure he stayed composed enough to avoid the traps laid by the opposition. When the final whistle blew, tension flared near the Paraguayan goalkeeper Gill. Gill extended his hand in congratulations, but Mbappé walked past without shaking it, prompting the keeper to hurl the ball at Mbappé’s back as the Frenchman celebrated. Gill later explained his reaction: “I offered him my hand to congratulate him, but since he paid no attention to me, I got caught up in the heat of the moment. I only did that, but then I calmed down.” His comment underscored the emotional intensity of the closing moments. After the match Mbappé posted on Instagram, writing simply “A day of work…”. He also criticised Paraguay’s rough approach, emphasizing the need to endure such physical challenges. The episode highlights the competitive edge that Real Madrid expects from Mbappé: a player who can absorb scrutiny, survive difficult nights and still propel his team forward. France’s progression to the quarter‑finals rests on that same resilience.
