McTominay returns to Napoli after CONI's green light
In the sunny training complex of Napoli, where the smell of freshly cut grass mixes with the tension of an upcoming Serie A match, the 29‑year‑old Scottish midfielder Scott McTominay is ready to resume group training after approval from the Italian Olympic Committee (CONI).
Medical test and green light
McTominay underwent a medical test which he passed with flying colours. The test, carried out by Napoli's medical staff, produced a positive result, after which the Italian Olympic Committee (CONI) gave the green light for his return to group training. For the former Manchester United player this means he can train again with his squad under the guidance of Massimiliano Allegri.
Since his arrival at Napoli the 29‑year‑old midfielder has scored 27 goals in 82 appearances. His contribution was crucial for the league title Napoli secured in 2024 under former coach Antonio Conte.
In the past, players who underwent heart surgery, such as Nwankwo Kanu and Christian Eriksen, were denied access to Italian football. Thanks to the positive medical assessment, that scenario remains out of reach for McTominay and Napoli.
Napoli say Scott McTominay back in full training after heart surgery
The heart operation, a minor procedure due to a cardiac arrhythmia, took place in September after being discovered by Napoli’s medical team. After two weeks of rest McTominay was allowed to resume individual training.
Whether he can feature in Saturday's Serie A match against Frosinone remains uncertain. The coach will weigh his involvement based on the latest medical evaluation.
Napoli faces a busy period with matches in the Champions League and Serie A clashes against AS Roma and Juventus. Key players such as Frank Anguissa, Alessandro Buongiorno, Mathías Olivera and Leonardo Spinazzola remain injured, while Dutch international Noa Lang will have to play a pivotal role.
