MetLife Stadium helps 2026 World Cup break attendance record

The Group E clash between Ecuador and Germany at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, on Thursday drew 80,663 fans, pushing total 2026 World Cup attendance to 3,605,357 – a new all‑time record, FIFA says. The match, part of the tournament’s opening stage, also set a single‑day attendance figure of 384,206 across multiple venues. The cumulative attendance now stands at 3,605,357, surpassing the previous record of 3,587,538 set during the 1994 World Cup in the United States. FIFA confirmed the new figure after Thursday’s Group E match. Because the tournament has not yet reached the Round of 32, the total will continue to rise as more matches are played. The organizers expect the final tally to exceed the current mark. Overall stadium occupancy has reached 99.7 percent, the highest rate recorded for any World Cup. This reflects the large capacities of the venues used in North America. Thursday’s fixtures also produced a single‑day attendance record of 384,206 spectators. Fans were spread across five locations: Philadelphia; Kansas City, Missouri; Arlington, Texas; Santa Clara, California; and Inglewood, California. The 2026 edition features a 48‑team field, resulting in 56 matches played to date. By contrast, the 1994 tournament involved 24 teams and 52 matches, while the 1998 expansion to 32 teams produced 64 matches overall. Stadium capacities in North America exceed those of many previous hosts; for example, Lusail Stadium in Qatar held 88,966 spectators for the 2022 final despite an 88,000 listed capacity. Only two of the 16 venues across the United States, Canada and Mexico have capacities near 40,000 – BMO Field in Toronto and Estadio Akron in Guadalajara – while MetLife Stadium alone offers about 80,000 seats. A FOX Sports tweet on June 25, 2026 highlighted the milestone, noting the tournament’s total attendance now tops 3.6 million. The post included a graphic of the attendance figure.
