Monaco sanctions Brunner with two matches for controversial gesture

On Thursday 24 September 2026 the Ligue 1 disciplinary committee handed the young Monaco striker, Paris Brunner, a two‑match ban for the controversial celebration that took place on 12 September against Strasbourg. The decision comes a few days after the incident, but the federation confirmed the seriousness of the act.

The sanction excludes Brunner from the next two Ligue 1 matches, against Toulouse and Lorient, upon the return from the break. The measure was announced on the same day, at 12:15, via the league’s official bulletin.

Details of the ban

During the 12 September match, which ended in a draw, Brunner mimicked a throat‑slashing gesture to celebrate the goal. The gesture was deemed offensive and sparked protests from the opponents and the fans.

After the match, the 20‑year‑old posted a message on his social media, describing the action as “clumsy” and apologising. The apologies did not satisfy the Committee, which deemed a disciplinary intervention necessary.

Consequently, Brunner will miss the fixtures against Toulouse and Lorient, leaving Monaco without its youngest centre‑forward. The coach will have to reorganise the attack for the upcoming matchdays.

Brunner, born in 2006, came through the youth ranks of Borussia Dortmund before moving to Monaco. His talent was spotted early on, but now he will have to serve the ban.
