Mourinho Confirmed as Real Madrid Coach After Perez Re‑election
Jose Mourinho has been confirmed as Real Madrid's new head coach following Florentino Perez's re‑election as club president until 2030. Mourinho signed a three‑year contract last month, which only becomes active if Perez retains his role.
Perez secured 65% of the vote, receiving 21,741 votes against challenger Enrique Riquelme's 11,814. He announced the result at an extraordinary news conference, pledging to keep Real Madrid winning titles.
Perez said, "We have won the elections and will continue working to keep winning titles," adding that the club will fight for its 16th European Cup. He praised the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium as the best stadium in the world and welcomed Mourinho as a "Madridista".
Mourinho's most recent trophy was the 2022 Europa Conference League with Roma. During his 2010‑2013 spell at Real Madrid, he captured La Liga, the Copa del Rey and the Spanish Super Cup.
Mourinho will replace Alvaro Arbeloa, who took charge in January after Xabi Alonso's departure. He leaves Benfica, where he was appointed in September and guided the team to third place in the Primeira Liga this season.
Real Madrid concluded the 2025‑26 campaign without silverware, while rivals Barcelona secured the La Liga title with a 2‑0 El Clasico win. Perez also promised a club‑record offer for an unnamed "great player" if re‑elected.
