Nathan Ngoy’s Anderlecht contract failure fuels Belgium’s World Cup defence hopes

Nathan Ngoy has emerged as a key defensive option for Belgium’s World Cup campaign after impressing in two matches. At 23, the central defender has established himself as a regular starter for Lille and in Rudi Garcia’s plans. He delivered a flawless display in Belgium’s 2-0 win over Croatia and followed it with another solid performance against Egypt. The Belgian national team’s defensive sector has long been seen as a weak point, prompting repeated experimentation. Ngoy’s rise has coincided with a period of stability in that area. His partnership with Brandon Mechele against Egypt was praised by staff and teammates alike. Jean-Baptiste Yakassongo, Nathan Ngoy’s cousin and close advisor, revealed the emotional impact of Anderlecht’s decision not to offer a professional contract. Ngoy, a lifelong supporter of the Brussels club, was devastated by the rejection. "It deeply disappointed him because Nathan loved Anderlecht. As a Brussels native, everyone dreams of breaking through there," Yakassongo said. The setback came after a tibia fracture at 15 forced a lengthy rehabilitation while playing in Anderlecht’s youth ranks. Yakassongo added: "Technically, they judged him too light. While peers secured professional deals, he had to wait longer." The rejection led to a concrete offer from Standard Liège, Anderlecht’s arch-rival. Ngoy joined the Rouches and quickly justified the move. His performances earned a transfer to Lille for around €3 million. At Lille, he has become a first-team regular, making 38 appearances last season. With a contract running until 2029 and a reported market value of €25 million, Ngoy is now viewed as one of Belgium’s most promising central defenders. His trajectory from Anderlecht’s youth system to European football has reshaped expectations around his career. Belgium face Iran in their second World Cup match on 21 June at 21:00 CET, live on Walfoot.be.
