Neururer warns: Leroy Sané faces DFB exclusion despite Messi comparison
The 71‑year‑old Peter Neururer, former Bundesliga coach, says that Leroy Sané (30, Galatasaray Istanbul) has the DFB‑out‑chance because his name is not on Jürgen Klopp’s squad list, which will be published on September 17 for the Nations‑League matches, thereby endangering his future in the German national team.
Sané’s Future in the National Team
Neururer emphasizes that Sané does have extraordinary abilities, but recently has not regularly played at eye level with Messi. He says, “Kloppo will go by the performance principle,” and asks: “If he can no longer show that, when did he last show it?” The winger has already received the chance several times, but the team needs consistency.
“I love this player, this type of player. He could play at eye level with Messi. But: When did he last show that?” Neururer said. “I don’t think that at Galatasaray he is capable of delivering performance continuously, that Jürgen Klopp would turn to him.”
Since his debut in autumn 2015, Sané’s career in the national team has resembled a roller coaster. The 30‑year‑old has so far earned 80 caps and scored 18 goals. However, at the Turkish champions he recently lost his regular spot on the right wing, which caused unrest in the team.
Goretzka as a Counterpoint
In contrast, Neururer still sees a DFB future for Leon Goretzka (31). After his free transfer to Aston Villa in the English Premier League club, he is ready to deliver performance again. Neururer explains: “I am convinced: If Leon stays healthy, he will deliver his performance at Aston Villa. That performance, which he can deliver, should be sufficient to return to the national team.”
At Bayern, Goretzka ended up playing only sporadically, but Neururer believes that regular playing time in the Premier League will give him the necessary form. He therefore sees a clear counterpart to Sané’s situation, because the team could benefit from Goretzka if he stays healthy.
In summary, Neururer notes that Jürgen Klopp’s decision heavily depends on the performance principle. While Sané’s exclusion from the upcoming matches is likely, Goretzka could be recalled to the DFB squad again if he maintains consistent form.
