New stadium permit ends two‑decade wait for Club Brugge

🇧🇪 By 4All Football Editorial ·

After more than 20 years of stalled plans and legal battles, Club Brugge finally secured a definitive permit for a new stadium on the Olympiasite, while the club still plays its matches at the Jan Breydelstadion. The contrast between years of uncertainty and a clear path to construction marks a turning point for the Belgian side.

The Raad voor Vergunningsbetwistingen announced on Thursday that the appeal against the environmental permit for the new football stadium was rejected, removing a major legal obstacle. With the decision, Club Brugge now has an uncontested green light to continue the project.

Club Brugge responded with particular satisfaction on its official channels, calling the permit a historic step after a dossier that dragged on for more than two decades. The club highlighted that no further blocking measures stand in the way of building its own modern arena.

Construction is expected to start in the course of 2026, and the club aims to host home matches from the 2028/2029 season. This timeline means that Club Brugge will continue to play at Jan Breydelstadion for at least two more seasons.

Sportingly, nothing changes on the pitch: Club Brugge will keep playing its games at the familiar Jan Breydelstadion, a venue it shares with Cercle Brugge. Nevertheless, the club has long pursued a solution that fully meets its own needs.

The relief felt by the blau‑zwart side underscores the end of one of the longest stadium dossiers in Belgian football, bringing closure after years of procedures, objections and delays. De club looks forward to turning its focus entirely to execution and delivering a new home for its supporters.
