One-year deal looms for 40-year-old Luka Modric at AC Milan

🇮🇹

One-year contract talks dominate the headlines as 40-year-old Luka Modric, whose contract with AC Milan expired on 1 July, weighs a short-term deal after Croatia’s 3‑2 World Cup defeat to Portugal. The midfielder is currently a free agent and is considering his future as the tournament ends.

Italian newspaper La dello Sport reported that Modric intends to sign a one-season contract with AC Milan. The report highlighted his desire to remain in Milan despite his age.

Formally, Modric became a free agent on 1 July when his previous deal with AC Milan ended. His status opened the door for negotiations with the Rossoneri.

Gerry Cardinale, the American owner of AC Milan, phoned Modric to express his wish to keep the midfielder for another season. Cardinale’s call reportedly reassured Modric about his future at the club.

"Unless a dramatic turn occurs, Modric is expected to stay for another year," Cardinale said. The statement underscored the club’s intention to retain the veteran player.

"It is crucial that I also contacted Modric to underline his impact," coach Rúben Amorim explained. Amorim’s outreach added weight to the ongoing talks.

Modric also has a family reason to stay, as his daughter plays for Milan’s under-13 side. The personal connection reinforces his affinity for the city.

All signals point to a renewal, showing AC Milan’s willingness to keep an experienced midfielder. The potential extension would keep the veteran in the Serie A roster for the upcoming season.
