Óscar García leaves Ajax immediately as Míchel takes over

Spanish coach Óscar García has departed Ajax with immediate effect, the club announced on its official channels on Thursday. García, whose contract ran until summer 2027, had been appointed interim manager of the first team a month after taking charge of Jong Ajax, and will not return to the reserve side. Míchel has been installed as the new head coach of Ajax's first team, confirming that García will not resume his duties with Jong Ajax. The club said the partnership with García ends by mutual agreement, effective immediately. "Oscar came at a difficult moment to Jong Ajax. Shortly after we needed him with the first team, and that was also not an easy situation. We are grateful for his effort and wish him all success in the next phase of his career," said Jordi Cruijff in response to the club's announcement. When García moved up, Paul Nuijten assumed the bench role at Jong Ajax. It remains unclear whether Nuijten will continue in that position for the upcoming season. Fred Grim, who served as interim coach last season, had previously been part of the technical staff alongside Nuijten. Grim's tenure ended when the club decided to promote García to the senior side. García was hired in February as the successor to dismissed Willem Weijs. A month later, the Spanish coach was shifted to Ajax 1 after the decision to remove Grim from the bench. Under García's interim stewardship, Ajax concluded the league in fifth place but secured the play‑offs for European competition. Consequently, Ajax will enter the second qualifying round of the UEFA Conference League in exactly one month.
