Oscar Garcia terminates contract with Ajax after four months

Spanish coach Oscar Garcia will leave Ajax after just four months, as the club and the 53‑year‑old reach a mutual agreement to terminate his contract that was set to run until mid‑2027. He had been appointed by technical director Jordi Cruijff first as the promising coach of Jong Ajax in February and a month later promoted to interim head coach.

Ajax entered the season aiming for a top‑three finish. The club ultimately placed fifth and secured a Conference League spot through the play‑offs.

Garcia, a former FC Barcelona player, guided Ajax to a final victory over FC Utrecht. After the win he declined to comment on a possible return to Jong Ajax.

Following his debut as promising coach, Garcia said he was not at the start of his coaching career and enjoyed training young talent. As interim coach he repeatedly expressed a desire to remain Ajax’s head coach.

Technical director Jordi Cruijff appointed another Spaniard, Míchel, to the head‑coach role earlier this month, ending Garcia’s hopes of taking the permanent job.

With the contract, which ran until mid‑2027, now terminated, Ajax begins its pre‑season preparations without a head coach. The club will need to appoint a replacement quickly.

Journalist Johan Inan, who follows Ajax for the site, also notes that Ismaël Koné faces a double leg fracture but must first pose for a team photograph with a teammate.
