Paul Clancy, two-time All-Ireland champion, dies at 49

Paul Clancy, two‑time All‑Ireland champion with Galway, died aged 49. He secured senior All‑Ireland titles in 1998 and 2001, added five Connacht crowns, and delivered the iconic no‑look pass to Declan Meehan in the 2000 final replay at Croke Park.

Clancy played his club football with Maigh Cuilinn. He helped the side capture the All‑Ireland Intermediate Championship in 2008. His performances at club level complemented his inter‑county success.

After retiring, Clancy moved into coaching and administration at Maigh Cuilinn. He served as chairperson while the club secured the Connacht Senior Football Championship in 2020. His leadership was credited for the historic provincial triumph.

Clancy also joined Galway's senior management team alongside Alan Mulhollnad. He later contributed to Laois under the direction of Justin McNulty. These roles expanded his influence beyond his playing days.

Maigh Cuilinn issued a statement calling Clancy "our most decorated player". The club added: "Paul is our most decorated player, an inspiration to a generation, remembered for having a sweet left peg, being teak tough and having an unwavering mindset but beyond the playing pitches he leaves a lasting legacy. He was an icon to so many in our community, so well known, so well respected and always had a word for everyone, a straight shooter with the boot and, if needed, with the lip. Calm and assured, reliable and loyal."
