Phil Foden Gutted by England World Cup Omission
Thomas Tuchel’s England squad announcement omitted Phil Foden and Cole Palmer from the FIFA World Cup roster. Nico O’Reilly said he spoke to Foden, who was “gutted” by the snub.
Both Foden and Palmer grew up at Manchester City, keeping their communication channels open. O’Reilly, a versatile academy graduate, won Manchester City’s Player of the Season and scored a brace in the Carabao Cup win over Arsenal in March. He earned a World Cup place alongside John Stones, James Trafford and Marc Guéhi.
O’Reilly described Foden and Palmer as “amazing players” and lamented their exclusion. He added that the players can now rest and prepare for the next season.
Missing the tournament grants Foden an extended period of physical decompression before pre‑season at the City Football Academy in July. The rest comes as Manchester City’s incoming management team led by Enzo Maresca prepares for a structural transition beyond Pep Guardiola’s decade‑long tenure. The break also benefits Chelsea’s Cole Palmer as he returns to his club after the World Cup break.
A fully rested Foden could serve as a vital cornerstone as Manchester City seeks to recapture the form that delivered a fourth consecutive Premier League crown in 2024.
A World Cup 2026 watch segment highlighted Tijjani Reijnders and Nathan Ake featuring in the Netherlands draw against Japan.
