Portugal's comeback secures last‑16 spot, sets Spain clash

🇵🇹
Portugal's dramatic second‑half comeback against Croatia secured a place in the World Cup round of 16 and booked a showdown with European champions Spain at the Dallas Stadium on Monday, July 6. The 2‑1 victory also marked a milestone for Cristiano Ronaldo. Ruben Dias and the Portuguese side rallied from an early deficit to claim a 2‑1 win, despite an outstanding individual display from Manchester City midfielder Mateo Kovacic. Kovacic completed the full 90 minutes, registering 63 touches and a 94% pass accuracy. Cristiano Ronaldo scored his first ever career goal in a World Cup knockout stage, becoming the first player to do so. His goal came as Portugal pressed for an equaliser before the decisive strike. Goncalo Ramos delivered the decisive blow in the 94th minute, rising above two Croatian centre‑backs to head in a pinpoint cross from Rafael Leão. The late winner cemented Portugal’s comeback. Croatia thought they had rescued the tie when the ball was bundled into the net through Josko Gvardiol, but the goal was ruled out for off‑side in stoppage time. The decision kept the score at 2‑1 in Portugal’s favour. Ruben Dias recorded 110 touches, 86 accurate passes and a 91% pass accuracy, while also winning five aerial duels and five ground duels. Josko Gvardiol featured only nine minutes, making seven touches and a 71% pass accuracy, and Mateo Kovacic added three shots on target and three ground duels won. The Portuguese lineup featured several players who work under Enzo Maresca at Manchester City, highlighting the English club’s influence on the national side. Their contributions were pivotal in securing the win. Portugal now prepares to face Spain in the last‑16 at the Dallas Stadium on Monday, July 6, with the victory providing momentum for the upcoming clash. A win would propel them into the quarter‑finals.
