Real Madrid's Schlotterbeck bid hampered by World Cup injury

Real Madrid's pursuit of Borussia Dortmund defender Nico Schlotterbeck is hampered by a World Cup 2026 injury that will keep him sidelined for two months. Complicating matters, his €50 million release clause expires on 31 July, just weeks before the new season begins. Real Madrid have already reinforced their back line this summer with the arrivals of Marc Cucurella, Ibrahima Konate and Denzel Dumfries. Nevertheless, the club still seeks an additional centre‑back ahead of the upcoming campaign. Among the names linked to Madrid are Manchester City defender Ruben Dias and Inter Milan centre‑back Alessandro Bastoni. Manchester City have ruled out a move for Dias, while Inter demand a fee above €70 million for Bastoni. A more attainable target is Borussia Dortmund’s Nico Schlotterbeck, whose contract includes a €50 million release clause. The clause permits a transfer to clubs such as Real Madrid, Barcelona or Liverpool. Schlotterbeck suffered the injury while representing Germany at the World Cup 2026. Medical reports suggest the setback will keep him out of action for approximately two months. The release clause remains valid only until 31 July, a deadline that is rapidly approaching. Because his recovery will not be complete by then, Real Madrid face uncertainty and have expressed doubts about proceeding with the deal.
