Toby Alderweireld blames lack of quality after Belgium’s Iran loss
Toby Alderweireld, former Belgium defender, said the main problem in Belgium's game against Iran was a lack of quality, especially with the ball, and noted that a red card made the match more difficult, ahead of the Saturday clash with New Zealand.
Alderweireld told that the main problem was “le manque de qualité”, especially with the ball. He added that “les grands joueurs n'ont pas répondu présents. Puis, au moment où Garcia effectue quelques bons changements … cette malheureuse carte rouge tombe.”
He argued that Belgium’s strength lies in attack while the issues are behind, but recent tournaments show a lack of offensive presence. “À chaque tournoi, on dit que notre force est devant et que problèmes sont derrière. Mais si on regarde les trois ou quatre derniers tournois, on constate surtout que nous n'avons pas répondu présents offensivement,” he said.
Toby Alderweireld flags unrest after Belgium defeats
Looking ahead to the Saturday clash with New Zealand, Alderweireld said coach Rudi Garcia will need to make adjustments. He specifically urged the inclusion of Hans Vanaken, noting his impact on the midfield. Alderweireld observed that Kevin De Bruyne played more freely after Vanaken entered the field. He recalled “cette belle occasion de De Cuyper où De Bruyne contrôle parfaitement un ballon aérien” as an example of the improved movement.Belgium coach Rudi Garcia’s Lukaku gamble backfires against Iran
He praised Vanaken’s ability to find space, saying “Il trouve les espaces comme personne.” He also pointed out that Vanaken has only received “une demi‑heure de jeu” so far and should be allowed to start to build confidence. He believes that giving Vanaken more minutes could enhance Belgium’s attacking options. A victory against New Zealand would secure Belgium’s progression to the round of 16, according to the analysis of the upcoming match’s stakes. He emphasized that the team must show a good face to keep qualification hopes alive.
