Real Madrid sign Cucurella, eye Carreras exit

Real Madrid have completed signing Marc Cucurella from Chelsea. The transfer fee could rise to €60m. The deal gives Real Madrid four left-backs on their books. Ferland Mendy has a year left on his contract. Fran Garcia also has a year remaining on his deal. Alvaro Carreras arrived last summer for €50m from Benfica.

Ferland Mendy likely to exit Real Madrid

Chelsea are reportedly considering Alvaro Carreras as a replacement for Cucurella. Jorrel Hato is expected to step into Cucurella’s role at Chelsea. Hato is currently Chelsea’s only left-back, prompting likely further investment in the position. Xabi Alonso, newly appointed Real Madrid manager, is familiar with Carreras from their time at the Bernabeu. Real Madrid could be open to selling Carreras if a suitable offer recoups the €50m spent. Jose Mourinho may employ a back five, allowing Carreras and Cucurella to operate together.
