Real Madrid sign Marc Cucurella after Mourinho push

Real Madrid have agreed a deal to sign Chelsea left-back Marc Cucurella. The agreement follows a direct intervention by head coach Jose Mourinho. The signing will be completed after Cucurella’s participation in the 2026 World Cup. Real Madrid will pay a fixed €55 million plus €5 million in instalments, bringing the total package to €60 million. Mourinho told the board on Friday that the club needed the Spain international or no one for the left‑back position, prompting the board to present a contract offer to Cucurella’s representatives that afternoon. Talks continued on Saturday, and Mourinho called Cucurella directly to confirm his desire to join the squad, leading to swift personal‑terms agreement. Prior to the deal, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid had been linked with Cucurella, but Real Madrid officials moved quickly to secure the agreement. Chelsea had initially wanted to retain the defender but were convinced to negotiate with the Bernabeu club. Real Madrid plan to announce the transfer in the next few hours. Cucurella is widely regarded as one of the best left‑backs in world football.
