Ronaldinho, 46, joins Ravenna as player-coach role confirmed
Serie C club Ravenna have confirmed that former AC Milan forward Ronaldinho will join their squad at age 46. The Brazilian legend, who last played professionally for Fluminense in 2015, will return to Italian football after his contract was terminated in September of that year.
The announcement follows days of speculation about Ronaldinho’s future, with uncertainty over whether his role at Ravenna would be promotional or competitive. Ravenna’s formal statement removes any doubt: he will be a registered player.
Ronaldinho turns 46 in March, yet the club insists his inclusion is more than symbolic. His jersey number 10 and name will feature on Ravenna’s new kit for next season, already available for purchase. A four-year Nike deal accompanies the move.
Owner Ignazio Cipriani, born in Ravenna and a longtime US-based entrepreneur, conceived the project. Cipriani returned to revitalise his hometown club after building a fortune abroad. Former AC Milan sporting director Ariedo Braida serves as a director at Ravenna.
A presentation event is scheduled for June 23 in Miami. It includes a VIP dinner for 70 guests and an after-party for 250 invitees. The unveiling of next season’s kit will take place during the gathering.
“I can’t wait to dance with the ball again,” Ronaldinho said on Ravenna’s official website. “New colours, same smile. I am enthusiastic about bringing this spirit to Ravenna along with Ignazio Cipriani and the Cipriani family.”
Ronaldinho’s career includes the Ballon d’Or, FIFA World Cup, and stints at Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain, Flamengo, and AC Milan from 2008 to 2011. His return to competitive football comes 11 years after his last professional appearance.
