Ronaldo accuses Jesus of breaking his word, stays cool – Ferreira in football

On Tuesday, Cristiano Ronaldo made accusations against Portugal's head coach Jorge Jesus in a lengthy post and described his attitude as “arrogant”. Despite the accusation, the superstar emphasized that he still wants to play for the national team, while Jesus showed little reaction.

Ronaldo publicly criticises the coach

Ronaldo wrote that Jesus had broken his word and was displaying an “arrogant attitude”. He recalled that ten days earlier, in a friendly match against the U21 in Leiria, he had not been substituted in and that a 30‑minute appearance had been promised to him but never granted. The 41‑year‑old striker also described a conversation with Jesus and sporting director Simão Coutinho, which in his view had not been sufficiently clarified.

Jesus replied on the same Tuesday with only two brief sentences: “I was in Leiria and watched the Portuguese U21 match, and now I will read Cristiano’s statement. I have nothing to say.” With this, he showed little enthusiasm and left it open whether he would further comment on the accusations.

The former Al‑Nassr coach, who had already worked with Ronaldo at Al‑Nassr in the pre‑season, emphasized that he was initially focusing on Portugal's future. Nevertheless, he left no room for conciliatory gestures, which disappointed many fans.

Consequences for the team and further reactions

After his hasty departure from the team camp, Ronaldo stated that he expected a suspension by the federation, but that he would be available again normally afterwards. He recalled his 234 caps, 146 goals and the European Championship title, but emphasized that the trust between him and Jesus was severely strained.

Portugal's federation chief Pedro Proença said the dispute was a misunderstanding and stressed that Jesus had a contract until the home World Cup. Proença tried to calm the situation while simultaneously leaving open the possibility of a return for the 41‑year‑old Ronaldo.

Joaquim Ferreira, who works in football journalism, reported comprehensively on the development and noted that the relationship between Ronaldo and Jesus remains uncertain. The discussion about trust and the future selection for the November match series remains open.
