Ruben Amorim appointed AC Milan head coach

Ruben Amorim has agreed to become AC Milan's next head coach. He is expected to travel to Milan later this week to sign a two‑year contract, replacing Massimiliano Allegri who was dismissed after a poor run that left the club out of Champions League qualification. Amorim will waive the salary Manchester United still owes him following his dismissal in January. United indicated in February that his departure, together with his staff, could cost the club up to £15.9 million. The 41‑year‑old had previously guided Sporting to league titles in 2020‑21 and 2023‑24, earning a reputation as one of Europe’s most sought‑after young coaches. He succeeded Erik ten Hag at Manchester United in November 2024 after the club turned down his request to take over at the season’s end. Last month, sources close to Amorim said he was not linked to the vacant Benfica job as Jose Mourinho prepared to join Real Madrid. Benfica have appointed former Fulham manager Marco Silva as their new coach. If the contracts are signed as expected, Amorim’s first match in charge will be a pre‑season game against Celtic on 25 July. Celtic will later meet Manchester United in Wroclaw on 15 August to close their pre‑season campaign.
